posted on another page (from yours truly)
Interestingly, only 1% of the RC Catechism is devoted to the Atonement Christ made on the Cross. Only 30 paragraphs. Much of what is defined is not very precise. The Eucharist gets 100 paragraphs. Once that is known, the Catholic (or Christian) understands the oft-heard claim 'The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith.' The focus of the RCC is NOT the Cross, but the Eucharist itself. Any notion of Christ's sacrifice being a substitutionary atonement (or God forbid, 'penal' atonement) is dismissed. The 're-presentation' of the Sacrifice (no basis in Scripture, Heb. 10) is more important than the Cross itself. 'It is finished' says Christ. But somehow, the RCC says this Sacrifice must go on and on. As a friend once told me, 'if Jesus did not suffer and die on the Cross, and 3 days later rise from the grave, then the Eucharist is nothing more than kabuki theatre.' Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe. Jesus atoned for sin on the Cross. It is finished. It is sufficient. No need for 're-presentation'. No need for a purgatory where I pay for my sin, or suffer because I didn't suffer enough consequences in this life. I can look to Christ and His Cross alone and be at peace. As important as the Eucharist is, it is NOT the 'source and summit of our faith.' The source and summit of our faith is Jesus Christ, and Him crucified, who rose on the 3rd day, where He SITS at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us on the basis on what He did and who He is.
